Guiding the journey: how career counselling supports integration

Published: 27.03.2025 / Blog

Nowadays, many organisations in Finland are offering career counselling as part of the integration process. The importance of helping individuals find a job or a meaningful career path cannot be underestimated. In the current economic situation, it is essential to provide the necessary support and guidance to navigate the job market effectively.

Career counselling plays a crucial role in the integration process by bridging the gap between newcomers and the local job market. However, integration goes beyond just finding a job; it’s about feeling connected and accepted in a new place. Integration involves offering language support, facilitating social connections, and providing cultural orientation. Moreover, it includes encouraging participation in local events and supporting mental well-being to ensure a smooth and successful transition into the community (Spencer-Oatey & Dauber, 2019). Effective integration ensures that people can live happier and more fulfilling lives. It can boost self-confidence and motivate individuals to contribute actively to their new environment.

“Preparatory Program for Higher Education studies in Finland for Ukrainians” (PrepProg)

This article is based on the study project, called Preparatory Program for Higher Education studies in Finland for Ukrainians (PrepProg). The project was created by Arcada University of Applied Sciences, Karelia University of Applied Sciences, LAB University of Applied Sciences, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Oulu University of Applied Sciences, Savonia University of Applied Sciences, South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences, Tampere University of Applied Sciences and Turku University of Applied Sciences. The programme was conducted online and consisted of four study paths: business, engineering, nursing, and general studies. Students from different paths were divided among six career counsellors. PrepProg counsellors organised several group meetings as well as individual sessions. During these meetings, it was found that students had varying work and study experiences, as well as different plans for their careers. However, they were also interested in learning about various study options, community events, language integration courses and job search strategies, regardless of their relevance to their current situation.

It is evident that due to the close relationship between career development and factors such as education, language, and social integration, the role of career counselling has broadened and became closely connected with integration process. It now involves not only job placement but also offering information about various educational opportunities, assistance in finding relevant social groups and providing emotional support. Thus, the importance of career counselling lies in its ability to guide individuals through the complexities of adapting to a new environment and achieving their professional goals. By addressing both career and integration needs, counsellors play a crucial role in helping individuals establish themselves successfully and feel a sense of belonging in their new community.

It is important to emphasise that the journey of career counselling does not conclude when the program ends. Findings from the project show the necessity for career counsellors to guide participants in planning their next moves. Integration is a gradual process that demands continuous support, rather than being abruptly finalised. As part of this understanding, students were referred to external organisations that could further support their professional development, enhance their language skills and build a local network. This initiative highlights the strong connection between career counselling and successful integration, demonstrating that the role of counsellors extends well beyond the program’s completion.

In summary, career guidance plays a crucial role in the integration process, which is a journey that demands substantial support. A key next step could be strengthening the connection between career counselling practices and external stakeholders. Since integration is a complex process, it requires ongoing support from industries and other sectors. It is likely that the role of career counsellors in the integration process will continue to expand over time.

Cultural diversity in healthcare – the role of leadership and education

The shortage of nurses is a global issue that already threatens the ability to deliver safe and effective care. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this gap in the healthcare workforce, especially in Europe, could be characterised as a ‘ticking time bomb’ that could worsen health outcomes and, in extreme cases, lead to system collapse (WHO, 2022).

From Beds to Bytes: Virtual Wards in Healthcare

The Finnish healthcare sector is facing rather big challenges. The ageing population and a high number of people with chronic diseases and disabilities, paired with a decrease in healthcare professionals, has set high pressure on the Finnish healthcare sector. This calls for alternative solutions, and one possible solution, that has been pioneered in the United Kingdom as a response to the chronic and unsustainable high demand for hospital beds, is the use of virtual wards.
