Arcada’s new podcast sheds light on key issues in Finnish healthcare

What started as an idea to create new teaching materials turned into a podcast for anyone interested in current issues within Finland’s healthcare sector. Behind the studio microphones for "Healthcare Horizons – Behind the Scenes of Finnish Healthcare" are Arcada lecturers Lotta Eronen and Mikaela Lindqvist.
The podcast aims to offer insights into Finland’s healthcare system through a format that is easy to take in.
"We have previously used live webinars for international students to provide them with a Finnish perspective on healthcare. This inspired the idea to create a podcast that could serve both educational purposes and appeal to a wider audience," says Lotta Eronen, lecturer in nursing at Arcada.
The podcast is not only for Arcada’s students; it’s aimed at anyone interested in the field, as well as professionals looking to expand their expertise.
"We focus on relevant discussions in society and the media. Although the healthcare sector is undergoing some turbulence at present, we need to apply our expertise to adapt to the situation and create positive change wherever possible. Our role is to motivate, inspire, and provide content that showcases various aspects of the industry," says Eronen.
Finland unique in the world
Healthcare Horizons is produced in Swedish, English, or Finnish, depending on the theme and guests of each episode. This multilingual approach ensures a broad and inclusive reach and reflects Arcada’s role as a Swedish-speaking but highly international university of applied sciences. The podcast features both Arcada’s own experts and invited specialists, as well as researchers and other key figures in the industry.
"The Finnish healthcare system is, in many ways, unique, and things we might take for granted are often highly appreciated abroad. We are also proud of our education at Arcada – we lay the foundation for future healthcare professionals who will be part of driving societal progress," says Mikaela Lindqvist, also a lecturer in nursing.
This is why both lecturers see the podcast as a welcome new way to spread knowledge.
"We must be innovative and offer various formats for teaching and professional development. The podcast is a response to the increasing demand for proactive learning methods, where individuals actively seek new knowledge. We see this trend among professionals, alumni, and students," says Lindqvist.
