My First Year at Arcada UAS – A Journey in Colours

Published: 14.04.2025 / Blog

Looking back at my first year, I realise it has been a journey painted in different colors – each representing a unique experience, emotion, or challenge. My name is Nhi, and I am an International Business student at Arcada. Let me take you through my colourful adventure.

Arcada Was White – A Fresh Start

Stepping into Arcada for the first time, I was filled with excitement and uncertainty. The spacious hallways, modern glass walls with natural light made the campus feel open and inviting. Everything looked fresh, minimalistic, and full of possibilities - just like the blank canvas of a new beginning.

Arcada Turned Yellow – Warm and Welcoming

Introduction Day was my first real taste of Arcada’s diverse and inclusive spirit. Students from all over the world, friendly tutors, and enthusiastic professors made the atmosphere lively and welcoming.

Even though Arcada is a Swedish-speaking university of applied sciences, language barriers never felt like an issue. Everyone effortlessly switched to English, ensuring that no one felt left out. I was initially shy, but the open conversations and warm smiles around me made it easy to connect and feel at home.

Arcada Was Green – A Place of Growth and Balance

Academically, Arcada surprised me. Unlike the traditional, rigid teacher-student hierarchy I had expected, the lecturers here were approachable and encouraged open discussions. Learning felt interactive and engaging rather than just passive listening.

The campus itself became a source of inspiration. My favourite study spot was the library, where I found motivation seeing others working hard. When I needed quiet focus, the private study rooms were perfect. But when the stress piled up, I’d take a break with puzzles or board games with friends-a small yet effective way to recharge.

The connection to nature also made Arcada feel “green.” Whether it was walking around the campus, enjoying the fresh air by the nearby sea, or participating in outdoor activities organised by student associations, there was always a way to find balance between studies and well-being.

Arcada Was Dark Brown – Challenges and Growth

Of course, not everything was easy. Unlike high school, where everything was structured, university required strong time management and self-discipline. Cultural differences also brought unexpected challenges. Group projects meant working with students from various backgrounds, each with different perspectives and work styles. At times, misunderstandings arose, and adapting to different ways of communication took effort. However, these moments pushed me to become more patient, flexible, and understanding - skills that I know will benefit me far beyond university.

Arcada Became Hot Pink – Energetic, Creative, and Supportive

Despite the struggles, Arcada is a place that nurtures creativity. No matter how undeveloped an idea is, it is valued and encouraged. With various programmes in entrepreneurship, engineering, and innovation, the university provides countless opportunities to explore and bring ideas to life. Although I haven’t joined one yet, it is definitely on my plan for next year.

The “hot pink” energy of Arcada also comes from its people. I have made friends from different cultures and age groups, and despite our differences, we support each other in both academic and personal life. There were challenges in adapting to new cultures, but I believe these experiences only strengthen our understanding and connections.

Each moment – whether filled with excitement, warmth, struggle, or inspiration - has added a unique shade to my journey. And as I step into my second year, I’m excited to see what new colours the future will bring.

How to monitor the transformation towards circular society?

In March 2024, the project partners for Agile Circular Competence Network organised a three-day Spring School aimed at students, companies, and researchers interested in the circular economy. The focus of the third day was on understanding how businesses can measure their transition towards a circular and sustainable economy.

Cultural diversity in healthcare – the role of leadership and education

The shortage of nurses is a global issue that already threatens the ability to deliver safe and effective care. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this gap in the healthcare workforce, especially in Europe, could be characterised as a ‘ticking time bomb’ that could worsen health outcomes and, in extreme cases, lead to system collapse (WHO, 2022).

From Beds to Bytes: Virtual Wards in Healthcare

The Finnish healthcare sector is facing rather big challenges. The ageing population and a high number of people with chronic diseases and disabilities, paired with a decrease in healthcare professionals, has set high pressure on the Finnish healthcare sector. This calls for alternative solutions, and one possible solution, that has been pioneered in the United Kingdom as a response to the chronic and unsustainable high demand for hospital beds, is the use of virtual wards.
