Baltic Reed
Background and goals
In the Baltic Reed project, nutrients are removed by mowing reed beds on the coast of the Baltic Sea. The goal is to restore coastal habitats and develop sustainable and profitable reed value chains for using the reed biomass. Focus will be on identifying most potential value chains and piloting for products and production chains. The project’s main financer is EU’s Interreg Central Baltic programme. Project partners are from Sweden, Finland and Aland Islands.
Objectives and benefits
The general goal is to remove nutrients from the Baltic Sea. Our project objective is to find higher value for reed to promote its use as a raw material. This will create ecologically and economically sustainable value chains for companies using reed as a resource.
Results
Baltic Reed will result in less nutrients in the Baltic Sea as reed biomass is harvested from coastal areas. This biomass will then be used by companies that have existing use for reed and by companies that innovate novel use for the reed.
Societal impact
Baltic Reed will identify bottlenecks and increase the value of reed products by resolving existing problems and innovating for higher-value products. Using existing biomass to economically viable production will have positive societal affect. Piloting of products and developing reed use in cooperation with interested companies can lead to new business possibilities.
